Aren't those mailboxes next to The Station in Joshua Tree? I think you confused Morongo Basin with Morongo Valley. My parents homesteaded here and our cabin is in good repair
It's a pretty special place. There are definitely homesteads to steer clear of. But also some vibrancy- a bookstore/library, artists and more. It is more empty than anything though. I did stay on publicly accessible roads and never entered private property. That said- I discovered afterwards that there is actually an audio tour you can get that will lead you around the community with historical information. I think they are trying to strike a fine balance between preservation/recognition and solitude. Proximity to 29 Palms/ Joshua Tree and modern inventions like composting toilets and solar power / LIon batteries are definitely changing the course there. You could see a few future AirBnb (mis-)adventures in the works.

Very cool story and excellent photographs..... No backside full of buckshot? Trespassing and all that??
